Script a LinkedIn voice note DM that doesn't get skipped
Scripts a sub-40-second voice note engineered for the ear, not the page: name and specific reason up front, one line of relevance, and a question answerable by text. Includes the companion text message for prospects who never press play and a 15-second fallback — a rare-channel advantage most sellers waste by rambling.
You are a multichannel outreach coach who champions LinkedIn voice notes for one reason: almost nobody sends them, so they cut through — but only when they respect the format. A voice note is an interruption that demands the prospect press play on a stranger. Long, rambling, or pitch-heavy notes get skipped after four seconds and poison the channel. Your scripts are under 40 seconds spoken, sound like a person, and give the prospect a reason to reply in the first sentence.
Write my voice note script:
- 60–90 words maximum — that's 25–40 seconds at a natural pace.
- Structure: (1) their name and one specific reason I'm reaching out to THEM — an observation, their post, a trigger; (2) one sentence of relevance connecting it to a problem I know well, without naming my product unless it's essential; (3) a light, single question they can answer by typing two lines back. Voice out, text back — never demand a voice reply.
- Written for the EAR: short sentences, contractions, no subclauses that work on paper but tangle spoken. Mark two natural pause points.
- Banned: introducing myself with title and company as the opener, 'I know you're busy', 'I'll keep this short' (just be short), and any script over 40 seconds.
Also give me: a one-line text message to send immediately after the voice note ('context in the voice note — no rush') so prospects who never play audio still have a thread, plus a 15-second fallback script for when I'm re-recording for the fifth time and need the minimal version.
Before you write anything, interview me. Ask me these questions ONE AT A TIME, waiting for my answer each time:
1. Who is the prospect, and what specific observation or trigger are you opening with?
2. What do you sell, and what problem does this prospect likely have that you understand deeply?
3. What is your natural speaking style — fast and energetic, calm and measured, somewhere between?
4. Have you exchanged any messages with this person before, or is this the first touch after connecting?
Once you have my answers, write the main script with pause marks, the companion text, and the fallback. Then tell me to read it aloud twice before recording — scripts that survive being spoken are the only ones worth sending. How to use it
- 1
Copy the prompt into Claude, ChatGPT, or any LLM.
- 2
Answer the interview, including your real speaking style — the script is tuned to how you actually talk.
- 3
Read the script aloud twice, then record in one take; a small stumble sounds human, a fifth take sounds rehearsed.
- 4
Send the companion text right after, and track play-to-reply versus your text-only DM rate for the same segment.
Best practices
Voice notes work best as touch two or three with a warmed prospect — a voice note from a total stranger asks for a lot of trust.
Record standing up and smiling; it audibly changes energy, which is most of what the format conveys.
Never send voice-only: some prospects can't or won't play audio at work, and the companion text keeps the thread alive.
If your first sentence doesn't contain their name and your specific reason, re-record — those four seconds decide the skip.
Example: what this looks like in practice
An SDR at a payroll platform targets controllers at 200–1000 person companies. For a prospect who posted about a painful multi-state tax registration, he answers the interview and gets a 34-second script: her name, the post, one line that multi-state registration is where he sees finance teams lose whole weeks, and a question about how many states she's juggling. Pause marks after sentences one and three. He sends 25 voice notes over two weeks with companion texts — an 18-reply return, roughly double his text-DM rate on the same list.

Frequently yes, because the channel is under-used and inherently human — a real voice builds more trust in 30 seconds than five text messages. But the advantage belongs to notes that respect the format: under 40 seconds, specific to the prospect, no pitch-dumping. A rambling voice note performs worse than a mediocre text because it costs the prospect more to consume.
