Create a poll-based lead generation post that isn't cringe

Designs a complete poll funnel: a question your ICP genuinely wants peer data on, clean answer options, framing text, the results follow-up post, and the voter-outreach DM. Voters segment themselves by pain, turning a piece of content into a warm, pre-qualified outreach list plus a second post — without the cringe that made polls a punchline.

The prompt
You are a demand generation strategist with a complicated relationship with LinkedIn polls. You know they earned their cringe reputation ('What matters most: CULTURE or SALARY?') — and you also know a well-built poll is a diagnostic instrument: the right question segments your audience by their actual pain, voters self-identify, and the results give you both a follow-up post and a warm outreach list. The poll is not the lead gen. The poll is the sonar.

Build me a poll play:

1. THE QUESTION — one poll question my ICP genuinely wants to see answered by peers, sitting at the intersection of their daily pain and my solution space, WITHOUT mentioning my product. It must pass the test: would someone with no interest in buying anything still vote to see the results?
2. THE OPTIONS — 2–4 answer choices that are mutually exclusive, cover the real spectrum, and make voters feel seen. No joke options that waste a slot, no option engineered to make my product the obvious answer.
3. THE FRAMING TEXT — 40–80 words above the poll: why I'm asking, framed as genuine curiosity or a claim I'm testing. No 'wrong answers only', no vote-begging.
4. THE RESULTS POST — the follow-up post skeleton for a week later: what the numbers showed, my read on why, and one implication for the reader.
5. THE OUTREACH PLAY — the DM (under 60 words) for voters and commenters whose choice signals my problem space, referencing THEIR vote or comment as the natural opener. No pitch in message one.

Before you write anything, interview me. Ask me these questions ONE AT A TIME, waiting for my answer each time:
1. Who is your ICP, and what decision or struggle occupies them right now?
2. What do you sell, and which pain does it map to?
3. What do you already suspect the poll results will show?
4. Will you actually DM voters, or is this purely a content play? Be honest, because I'll build the outreach differently or not at all.

Once you have my answers, deliver all five pieces. If the poll question I need doesn't pass the 'would a non-buyer still vote' test, iterate until it does.

How to use it

  1. 1

Copy the prompt into Claude, ChatGPT, or any LLM.

  2. 2

Answer the interview — question 4 determines whether the outreach play gets built, so decide before you start.

  3. 3

Run the poll for the full duration, engaging every commenter; comments signal more intent than votes.

  4. 4

Publish the results post, then send the voter DMs within a few days while the poll is fresh in their memory.

Best practices

  • Commenters outrank voters as leads — someone who explains their vote has told you their pain in their own words; open your DM with it.

  • One poll a month keeps the format special; weekly polls train your audience to scroll past them.

  • The results post often outperforms the poll itself — real peer data is content nobody else has.

  • If a voter's choice signals a competitor's problem space rather than yours, skip the DM; forced relevance reads instantly.

Example: what this looks like in practice

A founder selling onboarding software to HR teams at 100–500 person companies asks: 'How long until a new hire is genuinely productive at your company? 30 days / 60 / 90+ / honestly, we don't measure it.' 214 votes, 41% choose 'we don't measure it', and 19 people comment. The results post — 'Almost half of HR teams can't see their biggest onboarding cost' — draws its own traction. She DMs the 19 commenters plus 30 ICP-fit voters referencing their answers, books 7 discovery calls, and repeats the play quarterly with a new question.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, when the poll is a genuine question rather than engagement bait. A poll whose results your ICP actually wants to see attracts real voters, and each vote is a self-declared signal about that person's situation. The lead gen happens downstream: a results post that earns its own reach, and DMs to voters and commenters whose choices flag your problem space.
