Write outreach to members of a LinkedIn group you share

Turns shared group membership from a lazy opener into a real channel: a filter for which members are worth messaging, separate messages for active versus quiet members, and an escalation path. If you've never participated in the group yourself, it makes you post first — visible members convert far better than lurkers.

The prompt
You are a community-based prospecting specialist. You know shared LinkedIn group membership is a weak hook on its own — most members joined years ago and forgot — but a strong hook when combined with actual group activity. You also know LinkedIn lets you message fellow group members without a connection or InMail credit in many cases, which makes groups a quietly useful channel when worked respectfully.

Write my group outreach approach:

1. THE FILTER — from my answers, define which group members are worth messaging: active posters and commenters first, then members whose profile signals they're living the group's topic now. Tell me to skip the ghosts unless another signal exists.
2. MESSAGE A (for active members) — under 60 words, opens with something they actually posted or commented in the group, engages with their point genuinely, ends with a question that continues THEIR thread of thinking. No pitch.
3. MESSAGE B (for relevant-but-quiet members) — under 60 words, uses the group's shared topic as context but leans on a second signal from their profile. Honest framing: 'we're both in [group]' is the context, not the reason.
4. THE ESCALATION — one line on when and how the conversation can move toward business without souring it.

Banned: 'I noticed we're both members of...' as the entire hook, any immediate pitch, and messaging more than a handful of members of the same group per day — communities talk.

Before you write anything, interview me. Ask me these questions ONE AT A TIME, waiting for my answer each time:
1. Which group, and what is it actually about day to day?
2. What have you seen in the group recently — paste or describe 1–2 real posts or discussions?
3. Who are you targeting inside it, and what do you sell?
4. Have you posted or commented in this group yourself? Be honest.

Once you have my answers, write both messages and the filter. If I've never participated in the group, tell me the one comment or post I should make first, because outreach from a visible member converts at multiples of outreach from a lurker.

How to use it

  1. 1

Copy the prompt into Claude, ChatGPT, or any LLM.

  2. 2

Answer the interview — spend 10 minutes in the group's recent activity first so question 2 has real material.

  3. 3

Make the participation move the model prescribes before sending anything if you've been a lurker.

  4. 4

Message a handful of members per day at most, prioritizing people active in the last month.

Best practices

  • Comment on a member's group post a day or two before DMing them — the two-step lands far softer than a cold group message.

  • Niche, moderated groups massively outperform 500k-member ghost towns; pick groups where your ICP actually talks.

  • Group message allowances and rules shift with LinkedIn updates — check what's currently possible before planning volume around it.

  • If the group has a Slack or Discord sibling community, activity there is often higher-signal than LinkedIn group activity itself.

Example: what this looks like in practice

A founder selling ISO 27001 compliance tooling joins a 12,000-member infosec practitioners group. He answers the interview with two real threads — one on audit evidence fatigue with 40 comments. The model filters his targets to the 25 commenters on that thread with security-lead titles, has him add his own comment first, then writes Message A engaging each commenter's specific point. Over three weeks he DMs 20 people, gets 11 replies because they recognize his name from the thread, and sources 4 discovery calls without one pitch-first message.

Frequently asked questions

Often yes — shared group membership has historically allowed direct messages to fellow members without a connection or InMail credit, though LinkedIn adjusts these allowances periodically and per-group settings vary. Check what the platform currently permits before building volume plans on it. Even where it works, treat it as a privilege: communities notice members who treat the roster as a lead list.
