Clay Waterfall Enrichment Guide 2026 (Step-by-Step)

Clay waterfall enrichment is the single most effective way to build a high-quality contact list, because it solves the problem that quietly wrecks most outbound: no single data provider has everyone. One provider might find an email for 40 percent of your list and another for a different 40 percent. A waterfall queries them in sequence, so when the first provider comes up empty, the next one tries, and the next, until you get a verified result. The outcome is a dramatically higher match rate than any single tool can deliver alone.

We orchestrate data enrichment inside the outbound systems we run, and Clay is the tool we reach for when match rate and quality matter. Here is how to set up a waterfall step by step.

What Waterfall Enrichment Actually Is

A waterfall is a fallback chain. Instead of relying on one data source, you line up several and run them in order of cost and accuracy. The first, usually your cheapest reliable provider, runs against the whole list. For every contact it cannot find, the second provider tries. For everything still missing, the third runs, and so on.

The logic is simple but powerful: only pay for the next provider when the previous one fails. You get the combined coverage of many databases while spending efficiently, because you never run an expensive provider on a contact a cheaper one already found.

Clay is built for exactly this. It connects to dozens of data providers and lets you chain them together with conditional run logic, which is why it has become the standard tool for serious enrichment workflows.

Step 1: Build and Source Your Clay Table

Start with a Clay table populated with the records you want to enrich. You can import a CSV, pull from a saved search, or source companies and people directly through Clay's built-in finders. At minimum you want the fields a provider needs to make a match, typically full name and company domain for finding a work email.

Clean inputs matter here. If your company domains are wrong, even a perfect waterfall will fail, because the providers have nothing accurate to match against.

Step 2: Add Your First Enrichment Provider

Add an enrichment column using your first provider, the one with a strong balance of coverage and cost. Map the inputs correctly, name, domain, or LinkedIn URL depending on what the provider needs, and run it across the table. This first pass will find a meaningful share of your contacts.

Note your match rate after this run. That number is your baseline, and the whole point of the waterfall is to push it much higher.

Step 3: Add Fallback Providers With Conditional Logic

This is the heart of the waterfall. Add a second enrichment column with a different provider, but set a run condition so it only runs when the first provider returned nothing. In Clay you do this by telling the column to run only if the first provider's email field is empty.

Then add a third provider with the same logic, running only when both previous columns are empty, and continue for as many providers as your match-rate and budget goals justify. Each layer catches contacts the previous ones missed.

Step 4: Consolidate Into a Single Result Column

After your providers have run, the email you want is scattered across several columns, whichever one found a match for each row. Add a formula column that pulls the first available result across all the provider columns into one clean final field. This gives you a single, reliable email column to work from regardless of which provider found it.

Do the same for any other field you waterfalled, such as phone numbers, so every enriched data point has one consolidated home.

Step 5: Verify Every Email Before You Send

Finding an email is not the same as confirming it is valid. Add an email verification step as the final stage of your waterfall, so every consolidated address is checked before it goes anywhere near a campaign. This is non-negotiable.

Unverified lists are how bounce rates spike and sending reputations get destroyed. Keep your hard bounce rate under 2 percent by verifying at the end of the waterfall, and only export contacts that pass.

Step 6: Push Clean Data to Your Sequencer

With a verified, consolidated list, the final step is getting it into your sending tool. Clay connects directly to the major sequencers, so you can push enriched, verified contacts straight into a campaign without manual exports. Set up the integration so only verified contacts flow through, keeping the junk out of your sending tool entirely.

This hand-off from enrichment to sending is where many setups break down. Treating it as one connected flow, rather than a series of manual exports, is what makes the system reliable. It is the same orchestration principle behind our full outbound service.

Step 7: Monitor Match Rates and Cost

A waterfall is not set-and-forget. Track two numbers over time: your overall match rate and your cost per verified contact. If a provider stops pulling its weight, reorder or replace it. If costs creep up, tighten your run conditions. Providers change, and a waterfall that was optimal six months ago may not be today.

The best lists are not bought from one vendor. They are assembled. A well-built waterfall turns four mediocre data sources into one excellent list, and that list is half the battle in outbound.

Why This Matters for Your Outbound

Match rate is leverage. If you can enrich and verify 80 percent of a target list instead of 40 percent, you have effectively doubled your reachable market from the same source list, without spending a dollar more on prospecting. That is the quiet advantage a good waterfall gives you, and it compounds across every campaign you run.

But enrichment is one layer. A great list still needs sound sending infrastructure, sharp copy, and disciplined follow-up to turn into booked meetings. We wire all of it together, including Clay waterfalls tuned to each client's market, into one system that compounds month over month, and you own every asset we build. The results show up in our case studies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hiring an in-house SDR costs $5,500+/month in salary alone, before tools ($3K–5K/month), training, and management. Agencies typically charge $3,000–8,000/month. A managed outbound system like LeadHaste runs $2,500/month after a free pilot — with infrastructure the client owns and a performance guarantee.

With a properly built system, most clients see their first qualified replies within 2–3 days of campaign launch (after the 2–3 week warm-up period). The real power shows in month 2–3 as domain reputation strengthens, sequences optimize from real data, and targeting sharpens.

In-house works if you have a dedicated ops person, 6+ months of runway for ramping, and budget for 20+ tool subscriptions. Outsourcing makes sense when you want speed-to-pipeline, can't justify a full-time hire, or need multi-channel orchestration (email + LinkedIn + intent data) that requires specialized tooling.

Inbound attracts leads through content, SEO, and ads — prospects come to you. Outbound proactively reaches prospects through targeted email, LinkedIn, and calls. Inbound scales slowly but compounds over time. Outbound delivers faster results but requires ongoing execution. The best B2B companies run both.

A compound outbound system is an orchestrated set of 20–30 tools (enrichment, sending, warm-up, analytics) that improves automatically over time. Month 2 outperforms month 1 because domain reputation strengthens, AI sequences learn from engagement data, and targeting tightens from real conversion patterns. It's the opposite of starting fresh every month.
